Ed on RadioWith a long time history and a vast experience in racing organization in Europe and the USA, Ed Swart saw the need for a different type Historic Racing organization in Southern California.

Different from the member club that he had served and helped building up for the last 10 years as a Board member, Race Director and President.

Using his European background and long time racing involvement his goal was to create an organization with rules and regulations that would work better for the more upscale historic racers.

A different organization with one person making the decisions and with customer service in mind.

In the fall of 1998 came the opportunity when the Willow Springs Raceway owners asked him to organize some Vintage races at their track. This was the chance for Ed to start his own organization.

He now had a home based track available so he started his new organization. Since he had raced with HSR in the East coast and liked the way they operated, he approached the owners of that organization and proposed to them to join him as a partner, which they did.

This gave Ed’s organization instant recognition, good working rules & regulations and the name “HSR-West”.

In 1999 HSR-West started with 2 events at Willow Springs and one at Las Vegas.

Within the first year HSR-West had over 100 members and the schedule of events was extended to 5 events the next year adding Thunderhill and Phoenix to the list of tracks.

From the beginning the goal was to aim for high quality cars and to make the events hassle free and fun for the participants. Challenge races for points were introduced and late model cars were eligible in the Sports racer and Formula groups in the Challenges and BOSS series. The cut off year for Historic Production cars was 1974.

A West Coast Porsche 2.0 liter Challenge was started as well as a 2.5 Sedan Challenge.

In 2002 the California Speedway asked HSR-West to be the sanctioning body of their newly created promoted spectator event the “Southern California Historic Sports Car Festival”

The first year of that event brought out 280 cars from East and West coast and it was a great success. HSR-West was now organizing 7 events and had about 500 members.

In 2005 a new event, the “Palm Springs Revival Historic Car Races” a promoted spectator event, was added to the schedule and in its first year it brought out 160 participants.

Our goal is to run a limited number of events and to make them better each year.

We pay attention to details like running on time, plenty of track time, trophies and quality parties.

A broad scale of cars are allowed to run in HSR-West, but we do emphasize on quality cars.

Our Formula Ford Pacific Challenge is for cars up to 1972 , Club Ford up to 1979 and Exhibition cars up to 2005 (only cars with Ford engines).

The Formula 2.0 Challenge is for Formula Atlantic cars up to 1979 and other 2.0 liter Formula cars in various classes till 2004. The BOSS Super Cup also has several classes and we allow Formula One and Indy cars up to 2004.The FIA 2.0 liter Sports Racers have a cut off at 1979 and Can Am + IMSA cars up to 1985 The Group C cars run thru 1993, the WSC cars run as late as 2004 and the Sports 2000 cars run thru 1986. Production cars are eligible till 1974, but some later cars can run as exhibition cars. Our Porsche 2.0 liter West Challenge and the B-Sedan Challenge are active. We are also promoting early sports cars from the 50’s and 60’s and even pre-war cars, specially at events like the Palm Springs Revival. We invite special groups like the Historic Stock cars, the Historic Formula One and the Historic Trans Am to run with us at selected events.
